The Sterile Compounding Lab Pharmacist is responsible for supporting daily compounding operations by researching and developing new formulas, maintaining the formula database, verifying prescriptions, answering clinical and compounding-related questions, and ensuring the quality, safety, and accuracy of compounded medications. This role plays a vital part in ensuring compliance with all pharmacy regulations and quality standards while contributing to exceptional patient care.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Research and develop new formulas. Update existing formulas as needed for accuracy and appropriateness.
- Verify compounded prescriptions for accuracy, clinical appropriateness, and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards.
- Research and answer compounding or clinical-related questions from staff, prescribers, or patients.
- Assist with troubleshooting compounding issues and provide support to technicians when needed.
- Monitor and support adherence to pharmacy policies and procedures, accreditation standards, USP 795 and USP 800 standards, and other compounding rules and regulations.
- Collaborate with the QA/QC Pharmacist and Lab Director to assist with monitoring daily compounding and operational activities and ensuring quality control practices are followed.
- Participate in the lab’s Quality Management Program and assist with quality improvement initiatives as needed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe compounding environment, following all safety and handling protocols, including appropriate use of PPE.
- Provide professional and friendly communication to patients, prescriber offices, and vendors to support optimal patient outcomes.
- Understand the unique requirements of compounding and specialty pharmacy, including prescription fulfillment processes and applicable regulatory standards.
- Review and evaluate clinical information gathered during calls to prescribers, pharmacists, or patients that may impact a patient’s therapy or safety.
- Assist with patient questions regarding medications, preparation timelines, special packaging, and other requests, delivering service with empathy and professionalism.
- Contribute to workflow efficiency and process improvements within the compounding lab.
- Stay up to date with continuing education and new developments in compounding pharmacy.
- Proactively support pharmacy operations when needed, including shipping, inventory, or general pharmacy upkeep.
- Participate in the on-call rotation as required.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from an accredited college of pharmacy
- Active Pharmacist License in the state of Louisiana
- Not on the DEA Excluded Parties List
- Must pass a background check and drug screening. No pending felony charges or convictions for criminal offenses involving controlled substances.
- Ability to complete accurate pharmaceutical calculations
